For immediate release 28th October 2013: The premier team events of the Origin Culinary Arts & Hospitality Show are always hotly contested by the Resorts, Hotels and Restaurants. Iririki Island Resort entered both the Origin Restaurant Challenge and the Cocktail Canape Event, the only team events of the competition that includes Chefs and Wait Service staff, and they won both events.
Som Thapa, Food and Beverage Director of Iririki Island Resort said “I am very proud of the results my team achieved in Salon Culinaire. I love being back at Iririki. The medals we won meant so much to me personally. It is one of the proudest moments in the history of Iririki Island Resort.”
The Origin Restaurant Challenge is like a live restaurant environment where each team of Chefs prepare a 3 course meal for judges and guests, which is served by Waiters who are also judged on their service presentation and knowledge of the food etc. This year the contest was very, very close with all entrants doing exceptionally well across preparing and presenting great food. The entrants were Holiday Inn Resort who were placed second with 88/100 Points, Warwick LeLagon, 3rd place with 86/100 points, Moorings Hotel, La Tentation Restaurant, Coconut Palms Resort, and Iririki Island Resort who won the competition with 89/100 Points.
Iririki Island Resort also made exceptional food in the Cocktail Canape Event taking out the competition with 95/100 points, a Gold medal and a cash prize.
The Cocktail Canape event was supported by the New Zealand High Commission as an opportunity to premier the Real Pasifik: Vanuatu television show which was recently aired in New Zealand, and will be aired across Europe next year. The television series is the brainchild of celebrity Chef and cookbook author Robert Oliver who spent time here in February working with local chefs and filming the series across Vanuatu and at the Iririki Island Resort kitchen! The team from Iririki Island Resort has maintained the interest created by the series through their weekly Robert Oliver Vanuatu Cuisine inspired menu.
All the teams that entered the Cocktail Canape Event prepared fabulous food and took home well deserved medals - Air Vanuatu Catering and Chantillys were awarded Gold medals, APTC and Lagoon Beach Resort were awarded Silver medals, and Warwick LeLagon was awarded a Bronze medal.

Two members from the Iririki Island Resort kitchen have also made it into the Vanuatu National Culinary Team – Alick Niavi and Roslyn George will have the opportunity to represent Vanuatu and showcase their brilliant cooking skills over the next 12 months.
The President of the Vanuatu Chefs and Food Handlers Association, Chef Sarah Kymbrekos is really pleased with how the Salon Culinaire has developed over the years “We were thrilled to have Robert Oliver here to show our local chefs what will be seen around the world in the Real Pasifik tv series. Our chefs are capable of working to international standards and the Association is delighted that we have been able to incorporate more front of house staff and the industry’s students in the competition this year.”
Other notable achievements from Iririki Island Resort were in winning the Housekeeper of the Year and the Cocktail Maker of the Year. The Management of Iririki Island Resort have every right to be proud of their team that also included Sous Chef Alick Abel who competed across many classes taking three Gold and five Silver medals and Pastry Chef Marciano Rabi winning 1 Gold medal and 2 Silver medals. “Welcome back and congratulations to Director of Food & Beverage, Chef Som Thapa and his team” said Iririki Island Resort Management.
